Thomas Grooms is a Senior Reviews Manager at the Ohio State Historic Preservation Office, specializing in archaeology. With over 25 years of experience working with federal and state agencies, Indian Tribes, applicants, and the public to preserve Ohio’s cultural and archaeological heritage.
This session will discuss the National Register of Historic Places program with an emphasis on nominating archaeological resources to the program. Ohio State Historic Preservation Office staff members, Thomas and Abby, will provide guidance on how to identify archaeological resources, evaluate significance, and assess historic integrity as it relates to the National Park Service guidelines and requirements for nominating these types of properties. Using case studies, the presentation will provide examples of archaeological resources around Ohio that have been surveyed or listed in the National Register of Historic Places to provide insight on the proper way to evaluate these types of resources.
